Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Thermostat Review

General Information

Most peoples’ idea of a thermostat is of something that is permanently fixed to the wall and hard wired in. It turns the household heating and cooling on or off at set times and when preset temperatures are reached. But what about portable heaters or air conditioners? Enter the Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat.

Is it any good or just a gimmick and does it deserve to be included in reviews of the best programmable thermostats?

The WIN100 is a fully functioning thermostat that works with both heating and cooling. It has a seven day timer, in a 5 day 2 day configuration. It is totally portable and can move around with portable appliances from room to room as needed.

If you live in a house where the heating and cooling is unbalanced – you have cold spots when heating and hot spots when cooling, the use of portable appliances can often solve that problem and using a thermostat with them means that you can benefit from the timing and temperature control the same as with a hard wired system.

In some hot climate zones, there is no need usually for heating but occasionally there will be a cold spell where additional heating is needed. Often with portable heaters, they are either on or off, so there is no opportunity to pre-heat the room. With the Lux WIN100, this problem disappears. The same with cool areas that have an occasional heat wave.

Ease of Use        4.5

This is a very simple straightforward thermostat, very similar to the hard wired Lux Products TX9600TS Universal 7-Day Programmable Touch Screen Thermostat. Just set it up and you can virtually forget about it until you want to move it elsewhere. If you temporarily need to increase or decrease the temperature, just press and hold the ‘Hold’ button and use the up and down arrows until you reach the temperature you want. Then when you need to go back to the programmed settings, just press and release the ‘Hold’ button once more.

Installation        5/5

The main benefit of this device is that it is totally portable. Installation is just a matter of plugging it into an outlet. Check the user manual for full details of outlet requirements.

Programming    4.3/5

The unit comes with preset Energy Star approved programmed timings that can be easily altered to suit your schedules by pressing an up or down button to alter the time. There is only the option of a 5 day and a 2 day schedule, so every weekday has to be the same and both Saturday and Sunday have to be the same. The alternative if you have a different schedule on 1 particular day is to use the manual setting.

Energy Saving   4.5/5

The accuracy of this thermostat will generally save you money. Often appliances have a fairly wide range on their temperature settings, so the room is heated or cooled above or below what you set. The WIN100 will make sure that the temperature you set, you get.

The amount of energy that this will save you is very dependent on how it is used. If you want the room to be at the right temperature when you enter it, without a programmable timer thermostat you would have to leave the heater or air conditioner on permanently – if this is the case the energy savings (and the cost savings) could be considerable. For more info about what can they do, see Lifehacker’s post!

Alternatively, if at present you turn the heater or air conditioning on when you enter the room and put up with the discomfort until the room reaches temperature, by pre-heating the room you could actually use more energy – this has to be balanced against personal comfort.

Bottom Line      4.5/5

This does not have the stylish design of the Nest Learning or the 12 choices of color scheme that the touchscreen Honeywell TH9320WF5003 Wi-Fi 9000 Color Touchscreen Thermostat , it doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity with apps to control it manually – nor does it have the same price tag either.

The Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat is a very competitively priced, well featured device that can do what the others can’t. It is portable and can be used with portable heating and cooling systems wherever there is a suitable 110 volt outlet.

That alone more than justifies its inclusion in any review of the best programmable thermostats. We hope you find our Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Thermostat review useful.
